TMA-AIX-4.3.4.9
Ensure ftpd daemon is not in use
Description
This entry starts the ftpd daemon when required. This service is used for transferring files from/to a remote machine. The recommendation is that ftp is disabled and sftp is used as a replacement file and directory copying mechanism. This ftp service is used to transfer files from or to a remote machine. The username and passwords are passed over the network in clear text and therefore insecurely. Unless required the ftpd daemon should be disabled. Audit: `lssrc -s inetd -l` must not list the service (count 0).
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
command -v lssrc >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; n=$(lssrc -s inetd -l 2>/dev/null | grep -v tftp | grep -c 'ftp'); echo "$n"- Expected output
0
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
In /etc/inetd.conf, comment out the ftp entry: chsubserver -r inetd -C /etc/inetd.conf -d -v 'ftp' -p 'tcp6' refresh -s inetd
